Different Extents of Leaf - variegation in Epipremnum aureum as Influenced by Different Light Levels

Abstract
The variegated leaved pothos (Epipremnum aureum) and golden leaved golden pothos (E. aureum ¢¥Lime¢¥) were studied to find out the effects of different light levels on the extent of leaf variegation. Total chlorophyll content of pothos was always higher than that of golden pothos. In pothos, chlorophyll increased with increasing light level to a certain extent, and then decreased under the 0% shading condition. In golden pothos, the maximum content of chlorophyll was obtained under the 80% shading condition. The ratio between chlorophyll a and b reduced as the light level increased. Degree of the reduction was larger in golden pothos than in pothos. In pothos, the variegated area per leaf showed 23% and 7% under the 0% and 95% shading condition, respectively. And also the number of variegated leaves increased with increasing light level. Degree of the leaf variegation was more remarkable at the higher light levels.
